Allatoona Weekly Crappie, Shellcracker & Bluegill Fishing Report:
Let the Good Times Troll! We had two great outings this week before the cold front moved in just before Thanksgiving! The weekend weather leading up to Thanksgiving week was almost perfect for trolling for crappie on Lake Allatoona. We were able to find several good crappie schools in the middle of creeks and flats. Black and Blue colored jigs like the Red Rooster Talon 2.0, Kic'n Chic'n and Slab Dragon were absolutely our go to colors this past week. Black/Chartreuse and 'Lectric Chicken were great colors as well. We had a mix of sun and overcast conditions which prompted us to use solid colors due to the cloud cover.
Crappie: We got on the water a couple of times this week, one early morning trip and one later afternoon. The morning trip we found schools of crappie in shallow water anywhere from 8' - 12', suspended in 6' to 10'. The afternoon bite was a little different as we found schools that had moved out a little deeper to depths of 14' - 16', suspended between 10' - 12'. We did see a few schools that were settled in close to the bottom. In the morning we trolled 1/16th oz. jig heads at .7 - .9 mph to keep the jigs in the 5' to 6' range. In the afternoon we trolled a bit slower from .5 - .6 mph to keep the jigs down in the 8' - 10' range since the crappie schools had moved into deeper water and were suspended deeper. We rely heavily on our electronics to locate schools of crappie. A combination of Sidescan and Downscan is what we use to locate the schools. Sidescan set at 30-50' will show baitfish and crappie schools to the left or right of the area that you are in and Downscan will provide the DEPTH of the school. The depth is key because once you find a school you can then determine: 1) The jig head weight you need to troll to get to that depth and 2) Troll Speed to keep your jig at that preferred depth. If the crappie are deep or the wind is blowing, you will want a 1/16th or 3/32nd oz. jig head. If the crappie are shallow and/or the wind is light, use a combination of 1/16th and 1/24th oz. jig heads. You can always adjust your troll speed to speed up or slow down to change the depth of your jigs. Now this may sound complicated for crappie fishing but it's not bad at all once you get a few trips under your belt.
