Allatoona Weekly Crappie Fishing Report:
Is it August already? August can be a tough month for crappie on Lake Allatoona but we are still catching nice crappie by following the summer pattern. The end of July temperatures were not too bad as they were in the mid to high 80's which made for cooler than normal fishing conditions. We fished a couple of days this week and were able to catch several on deep brush and structure. We are seeing the thermocline between 14' - 30' on our electronics, remember the thermocline is the sweet spot for temperature and oxygen. Anything above or below the thermocline depth range has reduced oxygen and is not comfortable for crappie or any other fish for that matter. With the thermocline between 14' - 30' we are specifically targeting brush or structure in that depth range and are finding crappie suspended between 14' - 18' above and around the structure. We are casting jigs EARLY in the morning, between 0600 & 0830 specifically...once the sun gets up they are not even looking at a jig nor in the mood to chase. We did have good luck on the Dagger in UV Shad & MayFly colors. If you are fishing after 0830, you will need to revert to the tried and true summer time method of Spider Rigging, or at least fishing with a minnow. Crappie minnows, deep brush and patience are key during the summer months! The good news is that the boat traffic should start slowing down during the weekdays now that school is back in session. Remember to keep only the crappie that you need and release the rest to keep our great fishery strong for generations to come! Lord willing Team Red Rooster will bring you another report next week!
We would like to give a shout out to Jeff "Crappieman" Albright of Crappieman Fishing on Lake Allatoona and a long time Red Rooster Pro Staffer.
