Allatoona Weekly Crappie Fishing Report:
The summer heat is beating down once again this week but the Allatoona Crappie are still eating and we were able to pick up several nice slabs this past week! This time of year the days are long and the heat is on which makes it tough for any fisherman. To be honest most folks stay in doors under the A/C with a glass of sweet iced tea. Nothing wrong with that because August crappie fishing can be a challenge. If you understand the summer pattern you can still pick up a few active crappie in the early morning and after dark. Most of our fish are caught spider rigging with minnows this time of year. We are biding our time until the fall and cooler water temps, then the jig bite will pick back up through fall, winter and spring. This past week we fished only a couple of days due to the heat. On the water before sunrise and off the water by 1100. The crappie are still suspended around 14' to 18' on brush and structure. Even though it was hot, we still managed 30-40 crappie each day moving between known or discovered locations. This time of year is a good time to "investigate the lake"! Spend a little more time on the water scanning new areas and see if you can find brush and structure that you were not previously aware of. We use lake maps, sidescan, downscan, 2D and FFS to look for new areas that will be productive at all depth ranges. We find and mark structure that will be productive at different times of the year as the crappie move from deep water to shallow water. Remember, even if certain structure at a certain depth does not have fish in the summer, they may have fish in the fall or spring when the crappie move shallow. Remember to keep only the crappie that you need and release the rest to keep our great fishery strong for generations to come! Lord willing Team Red Rooster will bring you another report next week!
