Allatoona Weekly Crappie, Shellcracker & Bluegill Fishing Report

The last full week of April 2025 is upon us and we switched it up a little bit and went fishing for Shellcracker and Blue Gill! If you don't know Lake Allatoona is a great Bluegill and Shellcracker lake! It's no big secret that when the water temperature starts getting warmer it's time to start looking around for Bluegill and Shellcracker beds in shallow areas. The daytime and nighttime temperatures are getting closer and closer together so the water temperature this past week was between 68 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon. We were able to find a couple of beds and netted some real nice shellcracker with the biggest one being 13"!

The technique was simple:

  • 6lb test fishing line
  • #6 or #8 Aberdeen (long shank) hook
  • a small split shot pinched on about 12" above the hook.
You can add a cork or bobber to the line if you prefer or if you are taking a kid fishing it is fun to watch that bobber start moving or go under water! We started out using red wiggler worms or night crawlers and were catching both Shellcracker and Bluegills. We also had great success using a Red Rooster Dagger in Motor oil Red, Black & Blue, UV Shad and a new experimental color we call Paydirt. Crickets, worms or artificial lures like the Dagger will work well this time of year. We will be back on the crappie soon enough when they transition to the brush piles in the month of May.

If you are new to fishing and want to learn more about electronics, jig head sizes, jig colors and more be sure to tune in to FRIDAY NIGHT BITES which is a 30 minute Facebook livestream that we do on "Most" Friday Nights around 7PM you might learn something or teach us something new!

If you don't know what colors to choose check out our Combo Packs, this will save you a lot of time with proven stained and clear water colors. Lord willing we will have another report for you next week. Be sure to check out the archives for April 2024 and see what we were doing this time last year!

Verse of the Week: Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’” ~ Luke 24:1-7.
